Comments from H&Q Conference:

<<"We have been talking to a number of Internet search engine companies," says Andreessen, "But I can tell you for a fact that no deal has yet been struck." Nonetheless, Andreessen confirmed that one single search engine will be chosen for NetCenter within the next 60 days. "It could be sooner than that," he says. "We might just be hedging. But nothing yet."

NetCenter currently points browsers to a handful of outside search engines (but not Yahoo!, says Andreessen). "We have been giving away billions of wholesale hits," he says. "Hits that the search engines multiply by four or five and sell ads to. We started to take a look at the market capitalization of some of these companies and the revenues they were bringing in and we said, hey, these guys are getting a multibillion-dollar market cap on our backs. They should give something back."

The new Netscape, as described by Andreessen, is to create the Mother of All Home Pages. "Trust me," he says. "It's a hell of a lot easier to sell a $20 million dollar ad deal than it is to sell $20 million in software.">>
