Sal,

>>Anyway, I don't personally think Linux on low-mid range PCs would make much of a difference in CPQ's financials. There simply isn't any volume there.

Lower than NT workstation sales?

Just what do you think the profit margin on $700 PC's is for the manufacturer? I think $50 must be a decent cut of it otherwise why not a $650 model instead of $700?

>>Boy, this is really funny--there always has to be some ray of hope to fend off Microsoft: We've had Macintosh, OS/2, Netscape, Java, NCs,...and now, Linux.

So hilarious in fact, that Microsoft makes sure that every new PC owner pays them $50 whether they laugh or not. Kinda like wanting to see Leno then finding out you still have to pay for the RuPaul ticket too.

No one cares what OS is running UNDER their browser, that's what scares MSFT. What advantage does Windows lend to a browser? None. People wanting to use the Internet do not need Windows. People running IE, do. The future is in the Internet, or do you hype Yahoo because its easier than forming a human chain on campus?

Cheers,

Norm

People find humor in the strangest places, Sal. Me, I find it humorous that when the subject of antitrust, monopolies, and operating systems come up, suddenly Linux becomes a lot more viable in the eyes of people who normally deride it. But, I've always admitted being hobbled by the famous hobgoblin of small minds. Anyway, Windows could be replaced in a day! Bill said so himself!

Cheers, Dan, repetitious as ever, another hobgoblin thing.

Sal, Sal, Sal, <g>

Red Hat expects to sell 400,000 units of Linux this year. That's not that bad.

The os comes bundled with loads of software. If Netscape can come up with a shell and some apps - and if there's an API for the shell, give that out too - they may have a dark horse.

Watch for Be as well.
