Study Indicates Low Consumer Awareness of Latex Allergy!......... RICHMOND, Va., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Despite major stories in the media over the past year on latex allergy, a new study indicates that the majority of Americans are still not aware of the health risks posed by commonly used household products and Medical Devices containing latex. This finding comes from a national study of 34,000 households conducted by C.B. Fleet Company, Inc. Study results indicated that fewer than 4 in 10 (39%) respondents knew latex and latex byproducts can cause potentially serious allergic reactions. Of those who were aware of latex allergy, fourteen percent (14%) stated that someone in their family had experienced an allergic reaction to latex. Most allergic reactions to latex are minor, causing skin rash or contact dermatitis. But people who are especially sensitive to latex, or who have prolonged exposure, can experience serious breathing difficulties and changes in blood pressure which can be life-threatening. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received reports of 16 deaths attributed to latex allergy since 1988. But there may have been many more deaths which were not property attributed to a latex reaction. Many experts believe universal precautions to the HIV epidemic contributed to the increase in latex allergy cases. Prior to the early 1980s, latex was of very high purity and latex gloves were used infrequently. With the onset of the HIV epidemic, latex gloves have been used routinely by medical professionals. This resulted in tremendous demand for latex. In response, manufacturers had to find new sources of latex -- in some cases producing a product of lower purity and quality. The use of latex is not limited to medical gloves. Latex is found in over 40,000 common household products: from athletic shoes to balloons to erasers to automobile tires. If a person believes they may be allergic to latex, they should see their family doctor or an allergist. Since there is no cure for latex allergy, it is best to choose products that do not contain latex. C.B. Fleet Company, Inc., a pharmaceutical and health care products manufacturer, located in Lynchburg, Va., commissioned the research study to determine the extent of consumer awareness and the incidence of latex allergy. This was prompted by an increasing number of questions from consumers and medical professionals. Fleet's full line of enema products was recently converted to latex free. SOURCE: C.B.
