WDC c. call continued:

(4) more questions:

(h) Siemens: was good customer but has a small relationship with Acer - hoping to build on this.

(i) "Revenues flattish to slightly up next q"

Competitive Landscape: "War is never won or lost" - you are only as good as your latest product. Talked about "changing the game". "Cautiously optimistic" about "our arsenal".

Heads Availability: no problem

Sub 500 PC HDD: can put '$85' drive in them
HDD: getting to be the most expensive part of the PC

(j) Win 98 effect: "spur some upgrades" but not as much as Win 95
Expect Y2000 dates problem to have larger effect - "much bigger factor".

Sweet Spots: none were "really sweet" but 3/4/5 Gig were all high volume within a few hundred thousand of each other. Abandoning "nasty" 2.5 G area.

----

Conclusion: Though "still difficult" sees a "ray of hope".

(Overall: Not too bad all things considered. Earnings suck but the progress on virtually every operational front is proceeding well. With stronger balance sheet profitability for now is not a matter of life and death. Seems to me that they have a good bunch of products coming along and intend gainging back OEM share. Also sensed hints of some "tricks up their sleeves". They seemed to be pretty confident all things considered. Being the pure HDD play their recovery will be slower than say a SEG or QNTM but, after a few mishaps, they appear to be on track. But this one will take time!)
