While Compaq and Intel didn't exactly rake it in like they have in the past, their less-than-stellar financial reports this quarter didn't signify as much as they may have in the past either.

The market had already absorbed the soft-earnings news based on the companies' early forecasts. What's more, the market itself has gotten so complex that "it's impossible to make any substantive generalizations about technology stocks even when a bellwether like Intel has a bad quarter," said Dan Scovel, an analyst at Fahnestock & Co.
