long term the nikkei is often inversely related to the u.s. market. you will find that europe is more directly related as is hong kong. often emerging markets (latin america, ASEAN etc.) are lumped together although hongkong can be lumped with china these days.

look at charts of nikkei and you will see it correlates with most of asia these days (down), whereas europe and u.s. are highly correltaed (up).
