David, here are the stats as per a Nesbitt Burns research report from Oct. 97. Daimler Benz Methanol Necar III in Fall 97 - 1000 watts/litre power density and 50kw output. Toyota Methanol FCEV in Fall 97 - 193 watts/litre and 25kw output, not much changed from their 96 hydrogen numbers of 167 watts/litre and 20kw output.

In comparison, the first Daimler Necar I built in 94 was 180 watts/litre and 50kw output.

Output is not the main number to focus on, power density is, because Toyota relies more on batteries, like a hybrid, than Daimler. Toyota may have something better in the lab, but BLD is constantly improving on it's density even though cost is the main focus now.

The conclusion, from what each party has unveiled, is that Toyota is at power densities that BLD achieved 3 years earlier, hence the frequent comment that BLD is the technology leader.

Hope this helps.
