Tom,
<<And what might you say a thrifty fellow ought move his long term dollars on to?>>

The only significant change in my long term holdings has been the addition of IBM.
I liked their new (I perceive) aggressive posture in storage and I believe they have seen the wisdom in aggressively "managing" their earnings number ala GE.
I do find myself overweight in information services with investments in Unisys, GE, and IBM.
I continue to add to my GE position (my largest holding) because they are (probably) the biggest single beneficiary of technology, e-commerce, and communication speed. Note, however, that I have held GE for nearly 10 years and I am probably to "close" to the stock.

<<And who am I to question the more august opinion? Still, I might ask what they projected for 1999 earnings back in May-July of 1997.>>
Ah, the old question, Are the "experts" right or are they wrong? They most certainly were wrong in early 97. I am betting they are right in 98. That is what makes a market.
