I hope not. The other option is DWDM to GE or FC interfaces in the LAN or SAN. IBM is probably going to offer this approach. It may obviate the need for ATM in the LAN/WAN. If the entire network goes to optical switching at some point - you won't have to replace all the ATM gear.

All in my opinion, I am long TLAB and wish they had higher visibility in the DWDM area.

Corporation (NASDAQ:UNPH) today announced the appointment of Peter A.
Guglielmi to its Board of Directors.
He will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of William B.
Bridges, Ph.D. Guglielmi is executive vice president and chief
financial officer of Tellabs, a leading supplier of advanced
networking solutions to telecommunications service providers
worldwide, with sales of $1.2 billion for 1997.
Guglielmi has been the CFO of Tellabs since 1988. From 1993
to 1997 he was also president of Tellabs International, Inc. Prior to
joining Tellabs, he was vice president of finance and treasurer of
Paradyne Corporation for five years. He received a bachelor's degree
in electrical engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology
and a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of
Connecticut, Storrs. Guglielmi serves on several boards of
directors, including Tellabs, Inc. and the Chicago-based Cherry
Corporation.
"Peter's strong financial background and understanding of global
operations are just what we need as Uniphase enters its next growth
