IBM used to be the standard, like 95% of computers. The minicomputer companies never did replace it as the standard. However, people used them for a small percentage of applications, and that was enough to create the industry that eventually replaced the IBM standard.

A lot of this just happened because folks were tired of IBM. Engineers would talk their bosses into trying alternatives because they wanted something else, even when they would personally make less salary than on a IBM mainframe.

This is happening again.
