I agree that the direct effects on the bottom line in the near future are likely to be small. However, these alliances are beneficial in helping to attract and retain software developers on the Solaris platform.

Likely to have a quicker effect on the bottom line:

A lot of corporations want to standardize on Merced to give them the
largest number of software options for servers. This is not a great
situation for a hardware company like Sun who designs their own
processors and systems. This is why server side Java is so important.

The biggest problem is when will Merced be widely available for Unix
to take advantage of? A few more years allows Microsoft to improve
the scalability and reliability of NT.
