DSC Awarded Cellular Contract in Nigeria

AMPS Cellular System to be Deployed in Nigeria's Major City

DALLAS, April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- DSC Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: DIGI) announced today that its cellular infrastructure division, Celcore, has signed a contract to deploy a cellular system in Lagos, Nigeria. The contract is with London-based Reliance Trade Corporation plc, and the equipment will be operated by EM-International Systems (EMIS) of Nigeria. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Reliance Trade Corporation plc is a United Kingdom-based corporation engaged in diverse interests, including commodity trading, manufacturing and media, with an organizational focus on West Africa.

DSC will supply its Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) cellular network comprised of a GlobalSwitch(R) MSC-24, 12 GlobalCell II(R) base stations and a network management system. The cell sites will be sectorized, effectively allowing EMIS to service 3 discrete coverage areas with each site.

Three base stations will be co-located in each of the four cell sites, all within the greater Lagos area. The GlobalSwitch and one cell site will be located on Victoria Island in the Lagos Region and will be interconnected for both local and long distance traffic to Nitel, the local PSTN (public service telephone network) provider. Interconnection to the PSTN will be via fiber optics facility with C-7 trunks. Additionally, three other sites will be deployed in Ikeja, Festac, and Alaba, all within the greater Lagos area. Interconnection from each site to the GlobalSwitch will be via a microwave link.

Currently Nigeria has only four telephone lines per 1,000 people, with 35 percent of those lines located in Lagos. Waiting time for telephone service is 3.5 years, according to the World Bank. Nigeria is the African continent's most populated country with over 105 million inhabitants estimated in 1992. Lagos, Nigeria's major commercial center, has a population of more than 10 million. Nigeria is sub-Saharan Africa's largest producer of oil.

"We are very pleased to work with DSC to expand the telecom infrastructure in Nigeria with cellular technology," said Mr. Emeka Onwuegbuzia of EMIS. "DSC's innovative products are ideally suited for the African market to provide coverage and capacity cost-effectively."

EMIS Nigeria Ltd. is a limited liability company incorporated in 1992 to provide telecommunications services in the wake of Nigeria's deregulation of its telecommunications sector. The company has a national license and intends to cover all parts of Nigeria as soon as possible. Over 80 percent of the company is owned by Nigerians. The Chairman of the company is Chief Annie Okonkwo while the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer is Mr. Emeka Onwuegbuzia. EMIS currently has over 100 employees.

"This contract further strengthens our position as a leading provider of affordable cellular systems in Africa," said Tom Berger, vice president of DSC's cellular infrastructure division. "Due to the lack of existing infrastructure, operators are increasingly using cellular technology to provide basic telephone service in low-subscriber density markets."

The Street seems to like this new contract -- has given the stock 3/4 point. How much is the contract really worth in dollars per share? Anyone?
