Christine.

We are entitled to our opinion, and that entitlement is a blessing we often take for granted when we crow about the ills of this country. Many of our freedoms (and those of our European friends) were paid for with the blood of American men and women who fought to defend them--they were'nt gifts in a box of Cracker Jacks.

In my reading of history and study of human nature, I have yet to encounter a strong, enduring, heterogeneous civilization which has not exploited some group, to some degree, to attain or maintain its status. In the real world nothing is free, and unfortunately some suffer that others may prosper. Native Americans, Blacks, and others have indeed been exploited. They have also, in their turn, exploited others. This is a human (and broader still, an organic condition) not a cultural phenomenon which is limited to whites or Americans.

Martin Buber once said (roughly) "What I do for myself, I do for the world." Want to change the world? Start with one's self--it's more than enough mountain to climb.

As for your daughter's perceptions, I can't help but wonder what you've poured into her mind's cup.

Please write when you find Utopia,

Rick

p.s. Pardon my passion, but your Bad America post really struck a nerve.

>>"......about our history in relationship to blacks, Native Americans, and other peoples we have harmed or exploited."<<

Christine, what's this "WE" sh*t?

I have never harmed a black.
I have never harmed a Native American.
I have never exploited a black.
I have never exploited a Native American.

If you feel that YOU have harmed and exploited blacks and Native Americans then just say so, but keep ME and everyone else who has not done these evil things out of it.

Jim
