Ray, I've enjoyed reading this article, several times since first seeing it yesterday, and it is reminiscent of the "Beyond the Fiber Sphere" Forbes ASAP article written by George Gilder about six years ago, which I found at the time even more inspiring.

When these visions are fulfilled (what's next?), the bugaboo will continue to be the on- and off-ramps for many users, however, since the last mile region that historically has been characterized as the bottleneck will not have the fabric to easily integrate with a photonic layer. Nor will most customer premises equipment for some time to come. The access technologies to homes and all but the largest businesses will continue to use "legacy" electronic interface specifications which have been 'optimized' to the slower speeds.

We will indeed, I'm certain, find that these advances will serve to bolster the core networks of Internet Backbone providers' infrastructures, but at the same time they will also have the effect of re-defining the relative capabilities of the last mile bottleneck, translating to the same, or worse, waiting times.

Don't mind me... just waited way too long to get a couple of email messages downloaded, and I'm still suffering from the effects of a now-common neurosis known by many.

Thanks, Ray. Very interesting article. However, it seems to me that Ciena's DWDM equipment is a better technical match with higher performance switches like Avici's than to the 12000. Based on that, I would look for additional Ciena/terabit router agreements.
