It's extremely rare for an artist to control all the rights to their back catalog, particularly their earliest releases. He's using the money to buy out a former manager's share (the article doesn't mention it, but Tony Visconti is the likely candidate):

Some dipute on his net worth as well. This article suggests $100mil; other sources cite as high as $900mil. Whatever&#151more than I'll ever see, for sure.
