Just got back from the f*&#%* DMV where they charged me $95 to f#(^*&^% renew my car registration. What a load of S*&^. Anyway, while I was down there, I decided to stop into J&R Computer. I noticed a couple of things. Most notable was the continued lack of Zip built-ins, the "replacement for the floppy drive." Yeah, right. The ONLY model out of about 40 Wintel machines that had a Zip (and yes, a floppy) was the Compaq 4550. Even the mighty multimedia-ready Compaq 4880 had a 17 Gig DVD drive, 12 Gig hard rive, and 64MB, -and had NO ZIP DRIVE! The Apples had 3 models with built-in Zips. Two 8600's, and a G3- all top of the line machines. I went upstairs to check out the storage solutions. I noticed a whole lot of black and white-boxed refurbished (formerly broken presumed clicking) Zips. And- get this- I finally saw external SparQ's! Get them while they last! There was a whole rack of them. A salesman was helping a customer who had a IDE internal SparQ in one hand, and a SCSI insider Zip in the other. The salesman pointed out that the SparQ was faster, and was more reliable. I asked the salesman where the CD-RW drives were, and he showed me a glass case that was ransacked. I mean, the pickings were mighty slim. They are absolutely blowing CD-R and CD-RW drives out the door. You know why? I checked the price for CD media. Get this- Fuji, Sony, and Maxell all have 10 packs of CD-R 650MB media for $4.99 after rebate. That's only 0.49› a disc! Or, 0.00075›/MB. Folks, this is the future. It is now. CD Media is so cheap, it is ridiculous. And it is getting cheaper literally by the week. Go ahead and pay through the nose for your Zip and Jaz discs. I'm going to save lots of money by using CD-R and CD-RW.
