IBD 4-28-98 Internet Commerce Slowed By, Of All Things Software Sales

This was a huge article. Everyone should read it. I snipped a few paragraphs.

More than two months after axing its retail stores to become an electronic commerce company, Egghead.com Inc. spokesman John Hough. The Problem: The web doesn't have enough bandwidth to transmit many of today's software titles. "The technologies needs to improve signficantly,"Hough said

<<snip>>

"We can't distribute a lot of our products (over the web)," said Bill McKiernan, chairman of San Jose Calif based Software.net Corp. Only 10% of the Software.net 30,000 software products can be distributed over the web. But that 10% accounts for 70% of annual sales "As bandwidth becomes less of an issue, we expect to do 100% of our sales online" McKiernan said

<<snip>>

Analyst say digital subscriber lines and cable modems are the most likely solution for speeding up software downloads

IMHO Yahoo and the other internet companies need more eyes to grow. At some point the people who use/need the net will be on the net. The real success of the net is to provide the content distribution with a easy to use interface. I.E. a device that provides video content that is married too the web. Imagine a fat slob like me watch a football game and a icon for Pizza Hut appears on my screen. I take my wire remote click on the pull down menu and select pepperoni. Click on the remote again select thin crust and hit the send button (by the way the pizza will be paid for when I hit the send button). 20 minutes later a pizza boy knocks on my door with a hot pizza. Sounds like I am on my way to 300lbs.

Thanks

Neal

vladimir--

i think the point he is making is that to attract new users and make these operations more than just niche players they will need increased bandwidth to the home. shopping online is nice and all, but even at 48Kbps, it still takes too damn long.

one of the things that could help us is caching. @home has the technology, but so far they seem reluctant to use it in any endeavor not directly related to cable modems.

good luck to all,
trey
