I don't own it :-( but Elan is a company I've considered buying
off and on for years, always felt like I shouldn't buy at an
all-time high, but the thing has been at or near all time highs
for years -G-. Higher highs, too. One of those steady growers. I can't keep track of how
many splits, but it was a good 'un... I think at least 6 fold price increase since
1994. I haven't researched
it recently but if you are being offered stock and have substantial
capital gains on NXCO which you don't want to realize, I would take
a very serious look at Elan because
it may well still be the superb investment it has been over the
last several years (at least). I first got interested in Elan
because they were leaders in proprietary drug-delivery systems
(time release versions of things that were difficult to do well,
and very useful to have time-released versions of). They seem to
be diversifying into neuro stuff quite a bit (Athena Neurosciences
is another purchase I can recall, a year or 2 ago), and I can imagine
there are synergies with their drug-delivery competences there.

Let us know if you like Elan after more research! I recall some lurkers
who own the thing, so maybe they can tell us what they think, if they
can manage to talk through the broad grin that must break out whenever
anyone mentions the stock!

Marty, I agree with what Howard says about Elan, but I have sold my position. My style is to buy them dirt cheap and sell them when they get recognized. I sold my last piece of NXCO at 20 1/4. I think for long term investors, Elan could be a good hold and I was tempted to retain a third. But since I was only holding 2/3s when this thing took off, I decided to count my profits instead.

If you have a long term growth approach, I think Elan is pricey but making all the right moves. MB
