>Could somebody post the approximate market shares of the major head

Very very good question......and a nasty one to answer.
First one has to define the particular "market". Seagate and IBM are, for example, both head consumers and suppliers. As a head supplier, IBM, not only supplies itself in large part, but also peddles heads to other head consumers. It is very hard to track and measure internally satisfied head demand because it doesn't have to be reported. To the independent suppliers like APM and RDRT the market open to them is what is left over by consumers net of internally satisfied demand. Lately not a lot. Media supply has the same basic characteristics.

Another problem is sorting out any product flows into the Asian drive makers into which we have even less insight.

Constructively, the best sources I've found are the quarterly reports of the independents taken with gleanings from the conference calls. You usually get a sales % distribution for top customers along with total units and dollars.

Best Regards.....Tom

Jonathan, head/media market share report (11/97) can be obtained at Peripheral Research Corp silcom.com for $975. Or you can start with some bits and pieces from Mark Oliver et al starting at techstocks.com

or some time ago, Sam noted WDC had picked up 6 pts by staying with thin-film at:
www4.techstocks.com
but things change...
