*OT* *OT* You are right on the mark about the vacuum tubes being less susceptible to Electronic Magnetic Pulses (EMP) from radiation. We had to spend allot of extra money when we modified the B-52s in the 80s t try to shield the new avionic equipment from EMP. The problem was the Soviets were still using tubes for all their computers so they did not have the same problems and prompted much critisism over if we should be updating or not. We had to put an old B-52 on a pedastal and blast it with pulses to prove that the new shielding techniques worked before they would let us continue to upgrade the rest of the fleet.
