Panasonic gears for DVD production....................

onlineinc.com

Since November 1997, PDSC has manufactured more than a million 8.5GB, dual-sided, single-layer DVD-9 discs. Working in conjunction with its sister plant-the Osaka, Japan-based Optical Disk Systems Division (ODSD)-Panasonic's two DVD replication sites have manufactured and distributed more than 1.4 million DVD-9 discs so far, with PDSC handling more than 60 percent of the orders placed each month. The successful replication of DVD-9 discs is vital to the industry, contends Harvey Mabry, general manager in the company's sales and marketing department, because DVD-9 "utilizes the interactive and multifunctional capabilities DVD was designed for. Most of the titles developed for DVD-9 would not be possible on DVD-5. And DVD-9, unlike DVD-10, offers ample space for label artwork and does not require the consumer to turn the disc over while viewing it."

Although DVD-9 has proven to be the company's most notable achievement, both facilities also manufacture traditional DVD-5 (4.7GB) discs, says Holly Sefton, sales/marketing coordinator for PDSC. Other replicators manufacturing DVD-5, DVD-9 discs, and even DVD-10 (9.4GB) discs include Nimbus Manufacturing and Warner Advanced Media Operations.

Conceived and developed in June 1996 to ease the operations of the DVD replication plant run by parent company Matsushita Electric Industrial Company Ltd., and completed in August 1997, PDSC assists ODSD in manufacturing DVD-ROM discs for North American, European, and Asian markets. Since its inception, PDSC's monthly production capacity has consistently achieved 600,000 discs per month, and should hit 2 million discs per month by the end of 1998. Moreover, the company's president, Bob Pfannkuch, estimates that within two years PDSC's monthly production capacity will reach 10 million-a number in sync with projections from other DVD replicators.
