4/29/98 TeleChoice article. Dakota Services Deploys Ascend DSLTNT Excerpt: "TeleChoice interprets Ascend as taking an aggressive position in the DSL market's early stages by inventing "creative marketing deals" to win business and obtain early market share. " telechoice.com April 29, 1998 -- Ascend Communications, Inc. announced a large-scale deployment of its DSLTNT Access Multiplexer solution by Dakota Services, Ltd., a national telephone company specializing in data communications. To offer multiple high-speed data services to businesses across its region, Dakota Services will deploy nearly two hundred DSLTNTs , an integrated multi-service xDSL concentrator for the telephone company's central office. Ascend's DSLTNT enables Dakota Services to include complete end-to-end quality of service (QoS) and management capabilities, along with high-speed data services. Dakota Services is one of the first network service providers to deploy DSL technology in the Midwest including Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana, and Ohio. Dakota Services will offer multiple high-speed data services to enterprises that want to advance connectivity speeds to their Internet backbone and to their intranet wide area network. Ascend's DSLTNT enables Dakota to deliver multiple xDSL services, including IDSL, SDSL, RADSL-CAP and RADSL-DMT, on a single platform at speeds from 128 Kbps to 7.0 Mbps on a single pair of local loop from Ameritech. Dakota Services will first deploy SDSL services to customers for a monthly recurring fee ranging from $249 to $399, depending on service levels. The DSLTNT has the ability to operate as a Layer 2 multiplexer and is certified NEBS-compliant Level 3, which means it conforms to the requirements for central office operation in global carrier networks. The high-density DSLTNT can support up to 1,344 IDSL ports, 1,440 SDSL ports, or 540 RADSL ports in a single seven-foot telco rack. Dakota Services is currently a member of the Paradyne partnership program yet chose Ascend for its wide-scale DSL deployment. Ted Lasser, Dakota's CEO, informed TeleChoice that Paradyne is not "out the door" by any means. Its strengths and capabilities lie in multi-tenant, campus environments and that Ascend displayed its "entrepreneurship" in making Dakota's DSL marketing strategy a financial reality. Lasser concluded by saying that they are still deploying (and plan to deploy) the MVL in areas where it is the best solution. TeleChoice interprets Ascend as taking an aggressive position in the DSL market's early stages by inventing "creative marketing deals" to win business and obtain early market share.
