Net Detective rumors. CSCO buy IBM Network Hardware division. NT looking to buy GE startuptechweb.cmp.com April 27, 1998 The Obligatory Car Chase For a detective, I'm in pretty rotten shape. Living a life of cheap scotch, cheaper women and two packs of Lucky Strikes a day, I run about as fast as AppleTalk over barbed wire. The only difference is that AppleTalk doesn't wheeze. So when I spotted the information thief at NuStartup Co.--the company I had been hired to protect--I used my head instead of my legs. I yelled "Stop, police!" and then headed directly for the elevator. I knew the thief would go straight for his ride. I got into my '67 Mustang in the parking garage and turned the radio to my favorite all-news station. The announcer said that Nortel's Data Enterprise Network division is currently window shopping for a Gigabit Ethernet vendor acquisition. "Who isn't?" I said, lighting up a smoke. Before long, I spotted the thief. He crept into a bright red Porsche and headed out of the garage. I followed. I turned up the radio. The newscaster said that IBM recently turned down a bid from Cisco to buy IBM's Network Hardware Division. It sounded like there was more than basketball being played in the dark recesses of Research Triangle Park. The Porsche turned onto SNA street, moving faster now. The newscaster was saying that IBM plans to introduce Hurricane, a Java-based application server, at its Technical Interchange conference next week. Big Blue also will provide more details on Nagano--its high-end Web management/load balancing platform--and will launch new MQSeries interapplication messaging products. I pressed the accelerator as the Porsche hit 100 Mbps on the IP Parkway. I wondered what kind of packet engine he had. The thought reminded me that Packet Engines will join Bay Networks, Cambrian Systems and 3Com in a demonstration of Gigabit Ethernet over a metropolitan area network at NetWorld+Interop next week. Fine-tuning the radio, I heard that Computer Associates International is planning to announce partnerships with Compaq, Compuware Corp. and Dell Computer at its CA World show this week. I shifted into OC-3 and followed the Porsche onto the Information Highway. The Porsche was already at OC-48. I shifted again, and the wind was so strong in the convertible that I lost my hat and a few hairs with it. Over the wind, I could barely hear the radio announcer saying that Siemens Nixdorf this week will host a series of teleconferences to present its Unix technology road map. Realizing that he was being followed, the thief hopped off the Information Highway onto a connector pipe. I cut him off at the port, pinning the Porsche between me and the firewall on the side of the road. I jumped out of my car, reached in the Porsche's open window, and pulled the thief out by the lapels of his sports jacket. "Now," I said, "Let's see who we've got here." Help Case unmask the villain! Send him a news tip! E-mail it to ndetect@cmp.com or call 516-562-7809. If we use your tip, Case will mail you a Net Detective coffee mug. Snooping around? Look at last week's Net Detective.
