LOCK News! New York City Passes Bill Requiring Safety Locks On All Handguns Sold

TEQUESTA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 29, 1998--New York City passed legislation yesterday that would require all handguns sold in New York City to
be equipped with a safety locking device.

Saf T Lok (NASDAQ: LOCK - news) CEO John Gardner stated in response to the news that he was ''pleased at the recognition by the city of New York to
protect our children. Formal recognition of the need for responsible gun ownership has been long overdue.''

Saf T Lok manufacturers the only safety lock for firearms that allows the gun owner to safely lock a loaded gun yet have it instantly available - only to an authorized
user. The lock is a touch sensitive, completely mechanical, combination lock that requires no keys, batteries, computer chips or rings.

The bill, Int. 69-A, co-sponsored by Council Speaker Peter Vallone and Public Safety Committee Chair Sheldon Leffler was dedicated to the memory of an
8-year-old New Yorker who died as a result of an accidental gun discharge.

''The recent tragedies in Arkansas and Pennsylvania have cruelly demonstrated to the nation the necessity of providing safety locks for our firearms,'' said Gardner.
''It's really going to be difficult for any legislator, let alone a parent, to turn a deaf ear to the need for safer guns.''

Councilman Leffler echoed Gardner's sentiments pointing toward the future of gun lock legislation. ''This bill will reduce injuries and save many young lives, and that
is why I fought so hard for its passage,'' said Leffler. ''I am hopeful that it will provide the impetus for movement in Washington for federal legislation.''
