Yes, Thomas, I am pretty much aware of everything you have written about the colonists, and I would agree that it is historically accurate.

The more flag-wavingly patriotic version of events tends to portray the colonists as fervent constructors of a new form of government. Certainly this is the version that was taught to young children when I was in school. I was simply pointing out that it is simplistic. While eventually there was some consensus that we would have to fight for our freedom from Britain, there was also quite a lot of colonial identification with British culture, and a lot of shock and sadness as time wore on and we were essentially forced to continue steps toward separation and independence, because of a lot of insensitivity and bungling by them.

Did you see the PBS series last year on this period in American history? I thought it was really fascinating. According to it, George Washington was not a very good military leader at first, either.
