Maher: Borland is a well known brand name. To replace a well recognized brand name with a new one is in my opinion stupid Well known yes. Recognized yes. But unfortunately associated with a few other bad words - FAILURE LOSER TOAST CARRION LEFT-FOR-DEAD "MSFT ROADKILL"... And yes I know Borland's products are good, developers are loyal etc etc. But as proof about how stigmatized a simple name can be, just check out any story about Borland in the news media - always always the byline is "Borland which was thumped by Microsoft and left to rot...". This is negative reinforcement to all those CFO's and CIO's and their ilk - in their mindset BORL is bad, BORL is mismanaged, BORL is another Corel, BORL is going broke. Now would a simple name change alter this perception. No - not yet. But the new name is a link to a new company - one totally different from the old BORLand. One whose focus is different, whose mgt is savvy, whose finances are slowly getting better, and one we hope whose GMs contine to get sexier as time passes (service will reduce a bit but not important for this point). So now those dweebs in the press have one more line to add to their bylines in the Inprise story. Sure they'll rehash the old stuff but now they'll have to do some extra editing - "Inprise was once BORL - the Borland which was thumped by Microsoft and left to rot..." - that's a few extra words and is disjointed. In time they'll get bored and drop the rot part. At least I hope. --- At the very least we can trick all those boneheaded investors who still think Borland is: (a) a database company (b) a desktop app tool company (c) a loser company (b) an application tools company only And maybe even better we can trick a whole bunch of new investors who might think this is a new company and see that sequential revenue is up 25% . Or even better, much better, if Inprise plays their cards right this new bunch of investor babes will think BORL is a play on the INTERNET (which in reality it is - wishful drooling & dreaming) ---- Therefore be happy even if the new name is harsh - for a moment imagine if BORL had changed their name to INternet enterPRISE. And then followed with a story about how they were going to distribute CDs on the net... We will be seeing $25 per share tomorrow... And I'm living in Vanuatu right now... I wish (both)... Shane.
