John, Lucretius' (the contrarian) investments couldn't go much further down. There's a good chance that when and if they move, it will be up. I'd rather own something that I know is going up, like DELL for instance.

Why is it that this thread always seems to want to get nasty??? Gold, my friend, was up $2 today and has outperformed the S&P so far this yr. You best pray for yourself as a DELL holder. If this co doesn't BLOW away numbers and make better than expected comments about the future, this stock will come down. How much??? I don't know, depends. If they say something looking forward that the analysts don't like, DELL will get killed. Imagine, DELL will drop even if a few analysts move the stock to outperform from buy. It doesn't take much to knock you down when you're siting on the top.

Japan is on the verge of a turnaround IMO. I'm a contrarian by nature, what can I say? I'd much rather buy a mkt that's been in a bear for ten yrs and seems to have triple bottomed. Japan has no debt and the largest foreign currecny reserves in the world. Their coming out of our 1929 (1989 for them). Remember the gains of the 40's 50's and 60's???? I don't, but I've seen them on a chart. A little stimulation of demand (which Japan is doing) and the mkt will fly. so now I ask myself do I buy the US, huge debt and mkt that is bloated and weasing? or do I buy Japan? No brainer in my mind.

The obscure economist and the collapse of the world economy.

John:

I don't know whether you and the thread remember or heard of an obscure economist from [SMU-Dalls] who became infamous back in the early part of 1990s with his 'prediction' of the impending collapse of the world economies particularly that of the U.S. He was all over the TV talk-show circuits promoting his book and preaching to everyone to sell everything,ie.all assets including their houses, stocks etc etc as the world economies are about to collapse, the U.S in particular.

In case you don't know I am talking about Dr.Ravi Batra,Professor of Economics,Dedman School of Business,Southern Methodist University,Dalls. In case you are interested to know more about this guy here is a couple of links.

Anyway the point I am trying to make is this, some of these bears including 'the man with no name' seem to be fostering some Dr.Batra's ideas and you know how accurate the good doctor's predictions were. If anybody were to listen to Dr.Batra at the time and sold all their assets including their assets including their stocks and houses [I think he even said to convert everything to gold as cash would become useless] they would have been a lot poorer now than they were then and that is all I am trying to say here.
