Ancor to Showcase Gigabit-Speed Fibre Channel Networks for Storage and Remote Data Back-Up at Networld+Interop

MINNEAPOLIS, April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Ancor Communications (Nasdaq: ANCR - news) will run gigabit-speed demonstrations of its GigWorks(TM) MKII Fibre Channel switches at the Networld+Interop show in Las Vegas next week. The demonstrations will showcase the adaptability of the Fibre Channel switched network technology for both storage area and IP networking, including data back-up and video applications. Ancor's booth is North Hall 1153, Las Vegas Convention Center.

Specifically, Ancor will be demonstrating scalability, connecting GigWorks switches together in a cascaded fabric, and interoperability, by incorporating several vendors' products into the company's GigWorks solutions. A partial list includes adapter cards from Jaycor and Prisa, and storage devices from Ciprico, Seagate, Box Hill and Unisys. In addition, the back-up demonstration will be linked to the Sun Microsystems booth (2453) and the ATL Products booth (5325), located in a different exhibition hall over 600 meters away (GigWorks products can span distances up to 30 kilometers).

''The recent growth of the storage market is among the most exciting developments for Ancor and for the Fibre Channel industry as a whole,'' said Ken Hendrickson, chief executive officer. ''Ancor has been shipping Fibre Channel solutions for several years now, and the GigWorks product line reflects those years of steady improvement. For storage, customers are looking for reliable, flexible and cost-effective Fibre Channel solutions, and that is what Ancor delivers.''

Ancor has established a track record for successful customer installations at large sites. The company counts IBM Global Services, Amoco, and Boeing among the organizations with GigWorks networks either in place or being installed.

IBM Global Services was attracted to the reliability of Ancor solutions for its backup application. ''We can't have our applications down for even one second,'' said Ron Howell, network architect for IBM Global Services. ''Functionally, Ancor's Fibre Channel solution filled our need for a high-speed and absolutely reliable product. We were also very impressed by how easy it was to set up and test a Fibre Channel solution. Plus, Ancor came through with a real willingness to do what it takes to complete the project successfully.''

About Fibre Channel

Fibre Channel is an ANSI-standard, high-speed, low-latency data communications technology that provides gigabit-per-second transmission rates in storage/server environments and high-performance networks. Ancor GigWorks products combine the speed and simplicity of channels with the flexibility of networks to solve bandwidth problems caused by the transfer of large data files among storage, server and client nodes in high-performance compute environments. Ancor Fibre Channel products provide optimal speed and throughput for data-intensive applications such as shared storage, CAD/CAM, visualization, data mining and file backup.

About Ancor Communications

Ancor Communications Inc. provides GigWorks(TM) high-performance storage and data-intensive network solutions based on Fibre-Channel technology. The company was the first to deliver a Fibre Channel switch, and the first to top the one-gigabit performance level. In addition to Fibre Channel switches, Ancor products also include adapters and connectivity solutions. Ancor is a member of the Fibre Channel Association, the Fibre Channel Loop Community, the Storage Network Industry Association, the ANSI Standards Committee and the University of New Hampshire Fibre Channel Consortium to promote the advancement of Fibre Channel standards and interoperability. Greg,

Your story about John McKay reminded me of an interview I saw years ago with Minnesota Gopher Football coach Lou Holtz. Minnesota was never really a powerhouse in football, but Lou had them playing well. They played one of the top teams in the nation (either Nebraska or Oklahoma) one Saturday, and ALMOST beat them, even though they were heavy underdogs. Everyone in Minnesota was ecstatic, because they had played so well. Lou was interviewed, and the guy asked him if he would do anything different if he had it to do over again. Lou smiled, gave the guy a quizzical look, and said, "Of course I would! We lost!" <g>
