Robert, All, << To those wondering about AMAT's semi ventures >>

Applied Materials, Inc.
Applied Materials is the world's #1 maker of wafer-fabrication equipment used by semiconductor makers; the world's #1 semiconductor maker, Intel, is its biggest customer. Applied Materials' machines have a big share (ranging from just under 30% to over 60%) in most industry segments, including deposition (layering film on wafers), etching (removing excess material from circuit patterns on the wafer), and ion implantation (altering electrical characteristics of certain areas of wafer coating). The company also makes equipment used to detect defects in wafers and photomasks. It owns half of Applied Komatsu Technology, a maker of fabrication systems for liquid crystal displays. Asia accounts for about half of the company's sales.
