just some internet comments when i was following netz prior to the dclk ipo there was a guy over there i think named parker, he used to post a lot of internet related news, one of them had the demographics you were looking for , if i recall correctly the average internet user was in their 30s and income in excess of 40k.this came as a surprise to me i must admit. books, magazines,newspapers,travel, fashion have all been embraced by the net already . i think the netgrocers will have a definite future for non parishable goods. with the changes to tv and cable, entertainment will be another boom i think, libraries of movies to be downloaded for example at leisure,software is another obvious one, those that don't buy still browse and order over the phone, i think alot of money going into the development of the internet and internet2 wouldn't be happening now if the possibilities weren't there. an index called the nu wave would also lead me to believe there is plenty of interest, a computer in every home is the equivalent of a tv in every home during the 50s.
