ADE trims workforce by 12%

WESTWOOD, Mass.--ADE Corp. here said it was reducing its workforce
by 12% in order to cut costs during the industry's slump in capital spending.

The supplier of metrology and wafer inspection systems said the reductions
will be accomplished through attrition, layoffs and termination of
non-employee contracts. ADE also said it will take a charge of $500,000 for
severance and other related benefits in its fiscal fourth quarter, ending April
30. According industry data, ADE employed about 350 workers.

"We are taking this aggressive action to help move costs in line with lower
near-term product demand," said Robert Abbe, president and CEO of ADE.
He said the company expects the slowdown will continue to impact the
metrology and inspection systems markets for the next few quarters.
