Have read all posts on this thread with interest..
I'm looking for the recurring revenue stream aspect of
the IP network be it voice/fax whatever.

Are all the ISP's going to become phone companies??
ie RMII..IDTC and offer a low per minute acess to the
network or is FRO via SONET the safer play as they will
get the traffic regardless of who sells???

The software/server side may become a big biz but I don't
see a recurring revenue model there; unless the
Gateway server sellers have figured out a way to get
a useage fee from the people they sell to??ie ETEL etc

I did some homework and found out the basis for their quote. The delay was measured, as you put it, from speakers lips to the listeners ear, through a pair of Cisco VoIP gateways across a BBN test network that is being used to evaluate new technologies like VoIP and IP QoS. This network has several hops, but to your point, nothing like the existing BBN network. However, they were using QoS for the voice call while fully loading the network with data and the quality of the call was unaffected.

I agree with you that testing conventions and configurations have not been established (wouldn't want to put the marketing guys out of a job), so it is important to understand the context of results. Have you run across methods to measure delay and voice quality that you find particularly worth while, that would help sort through the facts and FUD that exists right now?
