It appears that the mean estimate was for a <$0.06> loss but I do recall that they did warn the street.

Mylex Corporation (MYLX)

After market close, MYLEX CORP reported 1Q EPS loss of ($0.10) vs a loss of ($0.13) in the prior year period, on net revenues of $28.3 mln vs $35.9 mln. Analysts' mean estimates were for a loss of ($0.06), according to First Call. (Reuters 04:31 PM ET 04/29/98)

Yes I would expect that our management would evaluate all their investments based on an ROI analysis. IMO they seem to have been operating on 'gut' feeling and making management calls accordingly. Other criteria I hope they would use include (1) growing stock holders equity by growing the company revenues and earnings, (2) continue to do what they do best (ie. design, manufacturing, etc.) and (3) contracting out those activities that they do not have current expertise in doing.

One example I recently recall is Ryder Company. They have re-grouped and now are the leader in the logistic management business. They work with other companies that manufacture products using the JIT (Just In Time) process. One contract they were awarded was for Saturn Company (thecar company). Ryder coordinates all component vendor (sub assembly) deliveries through their new logistics division. Ryder sees this segment of their business growing over 25% per year. They no longer should be considered just a truck rental company.

Perhaps MYLEX and our management can "re-birth" the company and develop a market niche that they can become a leader in and grow.
