contract, contract, more contracts .....

Ascend gets $20 million contract with DBN

ST. LOUIS, April 29 (Reuters) - Ascend Communications Inc. and Digital Broadcast Network Corp. said Wednesday
they signed an agreement for Ascend to provide more than $20 million in equipment for DBN's planned
telecommunications network linking 28 U.S. and Canadian cities.

The contract is for the rollout of an Internet Protocol-based network, which will be used for voice, video and and
high-speed data. DBN will provide both local and long-distance telephone service on the network, as well as
access to the Internet and other networks. The company will target large corporations.

DBN said that although the network is based on Internet technology, it will be able to connect to traditional
phone lines.

DBN said the first part of the network will be completed by September 1 and ready for commercial service in
mid-September.

Shares of Ascend were up 1-1/4 at 43-1/4.

4 questions to the thread based on Dennis Duke's H&Q Conference Summary

A. Q: What is happening in WDM? Fill us in more
A: Ascend will announce more plans during SuperComm, including delaings with
Ciena?

[Does this rule out LU? Have ASND and CSCO shared suppliers in this way before?]

B. Q: Comment on the win ratio?
A: I am very Bullish. We have won on Qwest agaisnt Cisco, LCI agaisnt NN, etc.
We do not see Cisco/Stratacom much. Nortel is getting a little stronger.

Q: How is the competitive environment, i.e., where is Ascend compared to Cisco?
A: I am very bullish. Ascend is well ahead of Cisco. We are not seeing Cisco Stratcom
in many of our accounts.

[Wow. This is strong stuff. Why has Stratacom declined so much? New products coming soon?]

C. Q: What is Lucent planning with Yurie?
A: We can't figure out what they will do with Yurie. We can't figure out why they
bought it. Michael added it sure give this industry a greater value.

Q: How has Livingston's purchase by Lucent changed the competitive environment?
A: It has not changed. They are behaving very much the same and we are still picking up
business.

[What is LU's strategy? It seems confused. YURI and Livingston don't seem to have added much. I've read that LU wants to emulate CSCO's success in acquiring and quickly integrating numerous startups.]

D. Q: Where are you seeing strenght and RFP coming from?
A: RFPs are coming from all over the world. Global, FT, DT and others are looking for
ATM RFP responses. As is Italy. RFPs are new business and we have to earn that
business (you see a mix of confidence with these caution statements).

[Isn't Global a 3Com customer? This is a very impressive list of potential new business.]

I would appreciate any responses/comments on the above areas.
Many thanks to Dennis Duke for the write-up. ASND management seems to have a nice quiet confidence in their prospects for the coming years. djane
