I know Whipple (retired ckfr) filled a 144 about a week ago for 100,000 shares. He probably used this high volume period to make his trades.

CKFR is trading on NASDAQ, so at least half of the volume was provided by Market Makers. Also at some moments the stock chart was following Dow chart pretty close, so I'd guess traders contributed to the volume as well. The larger the volume the more they contribute. They watch for volatile stocks and jump on the bandwagon.
On a trading thread one quote provider complained that some traders watch up to 1200 stocks at a time.
