Factory utilization drops to 65.2% (Korea)

APRIL 30, 1998 - The average factory utilization ratio among Korean manufacturing industries dropped to 65.2% in March, the lowest since 1985, as a result of the economic slump, the National Statistical Office announced April 29.
The office also said reported that the nation's industrial output declined 10.1% in March from a year ago despite increased commodity exports. During the first three months of this year, Korea's total industrial production dropped 7.8%.

The office noted that sales of cars, consumer electronics, and foods and beverages decreased in March for the third consecutive month, adding that it is further weakening production activities of corporations.

Corporate facilities investment plunged 36.7% in March, with orders for machinery falling in half, according to the office.
