You could be right. I certainly don't know. I know I have tried to do paired trades in my own account and its tough. In fact, usually the money was buried. Sometimes, you even get a double whammy down. Like shorting DELL and going long CPQ in the past.

I guess the value line fund will use its ratings to go short and long. Do you know the differential between their performance over time ?

Which stocks would you go long and short right now if you were running one of these funds ? Maybe we could get a contest going on the thread and I could track them. You know, give me your best long/short paired trade or something like that.

With stocks on average yielding less than 1.5%, the fund expenses would about eat up any income. It would seem to me that burying cash in a mason jar might be much the same thing.

They also earn interest on the short sale proceeds. Beyond that, any returns are due soley to stock picking skill (or luck).
