Doug: My expertise, if I have any at all, isn't in the area of numbers. So someone like Eric or Soup might chime in with something about that. My impression is, however, that the PB's were primary sales vehicles for Apple in the past. Their sales flagged recently, because I believe people were waiting for this next generation. Personally I bought the 3400c/240 and I loved it, but I'd be thrilled to trade it for the next generation G3, if I could. I want the additional speed and the lighter weight. I want it a LOT.

Linda

Does aapl have a significant earning potential from the PB?

I know you didn't ask me, but I'll chime in anyhow...

Yes, the potential sales for the G3 PowerBooks are staggering. The performance edge that G3 processors have over anything in the Wintel world are even greater in the laptop computers. Intel can't get power consumption and heat down enough in their laptop processors enough to offer anything faster than a 233MHz Pentium (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The top of the line G3 will offer a 292Mhz processor that will simply blow the doors off of anything in the Wintel camp.

Beyond that, Apple even stated that PowerBooks accounted for a lower percentage of revenues last quarter than in previous ones. These new PBs with G3 processors should really spur sales in a big way, and get Apple back on track for providing the best laptop units in the industry.
