Rentrak and Major in Alliance
PORTLAND, Ore., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Rentrak Corporation (Nasdaq: RENT - news) and Major Video Concepts, Inc. today announced they have entered into a long term marketing and distribution agreement. The agreement represents a major milestone for both companies and is the first alliance between Rentrak and any ''traditional'' distributor.

Under terms of the agreement, Major will market and promote Rentrak's Pay-Per-Transaction (PPT) system to its customer base of 8,000 video stores, supermarkets and other retailers of video cassettes. The companies estimate that less than 20% of Major's customers are currently participating in Rentrak's PPT program, creating a significant marketing opportunity for Major and significant potential growth opportunity for Rentrak, which currently services approximately 10,000 stores in North America. Major will handle all of the physical distribution required by Rentrak to Major's customers signed to the PPT program in the future and will be handling a portion of the distribution Rentrak had been handling itself.

Both company's presidents hailed the agreement as a classic ''win win'' arrangement. Doug Meadows, President of Major, said ''PPT is an alternative way stores can obtain movies. In those instances in which PPT makes sense, we want to insure that our customers have immediate access to it at the best possible price and terms. This agreement means Major's customers can utilize the industry's leading revenue sharing system without having to deal with two shipments each day. In addition, it provides our sales staff with an attractive new service we can sell.''

Rentrak President, Ron Berger, described Major as ''a terrific company with important assets including a sales staff of 120 professionals and a distribution group of 300 operating from 7 strategically located branches across the nation. This partnership means that Major's customers can receive their PPT cassettes in the same shipment with their non-PPT cassettes, simplifying their receiving and potentially improving their service. Major customers located near one of Major's distribution centers will now be able to pick up their PPT cassettes, preparing them for rental earlier in the day than had they waited for the UPS or Airborne Express delivery to arrive.''

Neither company would speculate on the number of Major customers which would immediately be turned on to Rentrak's PPT program and both emphasized that their relationship is non-exclusive. Rentrak may enter into similar agreements with one or more of Major's competitors while Major intends to enter into similar agreements with one or more of Rentrak's competitors.
