Hey all, I found this on the internet about Global Games sounds very exciting and this is only the gaming portion of the business. Go GLOW!
About Global Games
"Welcome to the Internet casino, ladies and gentlemen. Please place your bets. Cyberspace is the new frontier for one of mankind's oldest vices. The boundaries of the television set and the telephone are expanding in this dawning era of at-home gambling. Let your imagination run wild," says Internet sports bookie Michael Simone. "Whatever you can dream of doing, you will be doing, in time, on your computer or with your television set." - Rick Alm 1996 Kansas City Star
The Mission
The mission of Global Games Corporation is to provide software that will allow license holders the ability to create a world-class electronic entertainment and gaming facility, available on the Internet.
Global Games is currently delivering a wide variety of wagering games, similar to those of prominent casinos in addition to nontraditional wagering games and nonwagering games. Each game is designed to be highly graphical, incorporating superior quality graphics with movies/animation and rich 'lifelike' stereo sounds, depicting the players environment.
The Market...The World
Worldwide, hundreds of billions of dollars are wagered annually. The United States alone is estimated to be responsible for over $400 billion in annual wagers, and growing.
The Delivery Vehicle...The Internet
The Internet, a global communications network, is literally exploding with new users every day. Currently, there are over 55 million regular Internet users, with a growth rate of 10% per month! With this in mind, it is predicted that regular Internet users will exceed 200 million by the year 2000. It is predicted that the dramatic growth and use of the Internet will exceed the profound impact created by television several decades ago. As with any new media, especially one with the magnitude of the Internet, enormous potential exists for well planned and well delivered business strategies.
Technology & Resources
Currently, the majority of Internet access is by personal computer. However, Global Games is keenly aware that as technology progresses, the delivery vehicles for online access will change. Television, satellite and ISDN connections are good examples of current technologies available now or in the near future. Regardless of the path that online technology takes, Global Games will make certain that it is well positioned to take full advantage of all future technology opportunities. Recent 'Net TV' projects by world industry leaders such as Phillips Electronics, will bring the power of the Internet to more and more households.
Unlike most other companies (including competitive gaming companies) rushing to claim their stake in cyberspace, Global Games plans a unique approach in the method of which its gaming products are delivered. Today, the vast majority of companies are producing Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) code, which is the computer language used to develop and produce World Wide Web (WWW) sites and pages. While this is an excellent format for the delivery of information (browsing through catalogs or downloading files) it is not appropriate for use in highly graphical, fast action games. The obstacle is that in the environment of the World Wide Web, each time a change occurs on the screen an entire page and much of its content/images must be retransmitted. As a result, the host computer server system, regardless of its size and capacity, can bog down, causing unacceptable long pauses in what must be fast action games.
Global Games has overcome this obstacle by creating host/client software. The end user receives a client software package by downloading it over the Internet or by having it sent to them via traditional postal service. The installed software contains all the graphics, sounds, text, etc., necessary to participate in the game. By handling the software in this fashion, response time becomes immediate, displaying graphics and sounds to keep pace with the game, which retains the attention of the player. In fact, by utilizing this method of delivery, the gaming experience can be greatly enhanced when compared to any existing conventional communications method.
The Legality Issue... It's Legal!
License holders of Global Games' software are basing their casino and gaming operations in various countries throughout the world. The Internet, being a 'global' communications network, is not bound by the laws of any one country. The issue of gaming over the Internet is similar to the sovereignty issue which protects gaming on Indian Reservations in the United States. Currently, there are no laws governing the Internet in any country, which by nature means that there are no gaming laws. The only rules and regulations of gaming over the Internet are those that exist in the host country that the Internet site resides in and from which it operates.
John Russel, a spokesman for the United States Department of Justice is quoted as saying, "If the casino's are outside the United States, there's nothing we can do about it." In a Minneapolis Star Tribune article published on November 11, 1995 titled, "Betting on the Net" Peter Demos is quoted as saying, "We are an offshore business. Our position is that Internet gambling is legal where it is legal and illegal where it is illegal. If Minnesota or even the United States says they're not going to allow it, fine. We don't need Minnesota, or the U.S. either. We have a world market."
Nonwagering Games
Global Games will also offer a multitude of games for those who are too young to participate in casino style games or for those who prefer not to wager. This recognizes the success of Las Vegas based casino 'Circus Circus' in generating income from nongambling entertainment. Games such as chess, bridge, role playing games plus existing popular computer games such as DOOM, Duke Nukem, Heretic, Command & Conquer. Revenue for nonwagering games is generated though a variety of 'access fees' which is determined on a game-by-game basis.
