Ok , I understand. But then there is no way to ensure you dont lose gains by putting an order in and leaving it there, it sounds like. You have to keep checking and put it in when the price is where you want it. Yes? No?

Stop Orders...If the trading in the stock gaps down you can end up selling the stock at below your stop order. A while back I had some shares of Sierra Semiconductor. I put in a stop at 16 1/4. Nasdaq had a big one day fall and my Sierra stock was sold at 15 1/2, much to my regret.
