Also the fact is politics and religion became hopelessly entangled. The politics of the time were that any King in power had as his holy duty the job to free the holy land from the infidels. King Richard spent so much time in the crusades his brother ran the country (England) in his absence, and not very well (we owe Prince John a debt of gratitude for our freedoms today, his ineptitude and weakness was our blessing). The idea of prohibiting government from establishing a state religion was a good idea although today that concept has been twisted in an attempt to suppress Christianity in favor of a state religion of Atheism.
