Shane and others:
On the AMAT thread there are a significant number of postings in the last 24 hours in which
individual chip equipment companies talk about the significant reduction in the number of incoming orders and the expectation that demand is not likely to pick up before early 99. There is a particularly interesting posting describing INTC's plans to not fabricate 300mm wafer for the next 2 or 2 1/2 years. The point (wishful thinking perhaps) is that with the sharp curtailment of new capacity isn't it
reasonable to assume chip prices will stabilize by early next year ?
And if it is apparent (once again) that supply / demand is returning
to a balanced situation why can't the price of chip makers start moving higher late in 98 in anticipation of improving chip prices
in early 99 ?
