Western Digital to Buy Components From IBM

International Business Machines Corp., Armonk, N.Y., signed a letter of intent to supply computer hard-disk drive components to Western Digital Corp., adding to a growing portfolio of competitors buying the IBM technology. Terms of the proposed agreement, expected to be finalized within 90 days, weren't disclosed. Western Digital plans to use IBM components, including giant magnetoresistive heads, in hard-disk drives that will be unveiled in 1999. The pact also includes a technology-licensing arrangement under which IBM will share its disk-drive technology with Western Digital, Irvine, Calif. IBM's technology allows the disk head, which "writes" information to the magnetic disk and "reads" it back, to use the "giant magnetoresistive effect," a discovery in magnetism made 10 years ago.
