Went to the N. TX chapter of SID tonite, at TI. Only thing relevant here is that TI has a rear-projection HDTV set/ computer monitor in development based on its micro-mirror device.

HDTV needs to be at least 1,000 millimeters in screen diagonal for the differences to be obviously worth paying for. Screen aspect ratio is 16 to 9, like a movie. Its going to be at least a year, even in the ten mandated markets, before this thing is ready for prime time. right now, Channel 8 (Channel 9 for HDTV) is just repeat-broadcasting a one-hour loop of news and a nature video called "Texas Wild" all shot in HDTV.....over and over. If you get Channel 8, you should eventually get Channel 9, too. But, on the nature of digital, it will either be on or off, no degraded signal. Today, there are more transmitters (one) than receivers (zero) in Dallas County. The first three times they cranked it back in Feb. and Mar., they disabled the RF heart monitors at various cardio rehab units in the area, all of which were operating on Channel 9. Nobody died. <G>
