Your mention of Ascend being in the running for Level 3 Communications deal was
very encouraging. If they win this one, then they will have won all three of the major
new next-generation networks (QWEST, Williams, & Level 3). That would be truly
impressive. I have a hunch that they will win it. I don't think FORE has an OC-48
product ready, which would be pretty important. Or even if they did, FORE is a
small company and the instability might make Level 3 think twice about them. They
will also have QWEST and AT&T as competition, and if FORE's product can't
deliver the same feature-set as Ascend's switches, it could put Level 3 at a
disadvantage. I therefore don't think they'll go with a lesser switch, even if it's
cheaper. Just my opinion.

FORE is not a small company, it is half-billion dollar company.
Not as big as Ascend, but not small. That is FUD that Cisco
and Ascend like to spread. FORE has been the leader in ATM
since before Ascend knew how to spell it. FORE has been
consistently at the forefront (no pun intended) of new ATM
feature development. The ASX-4000 is not a "lesser switch",
it is leading the way. Check out "FORE delivers monster ATM switch":

From the recent announcement of Fore, Fore has an OC-48 product, namely ASX4000. Do you think Fore can compete with Ascend in the carrier market, such as Level 3?
