I like your analogy with E*Trade. However I disagree with your conclusion. If E*Trade's growth has been effectively checked by the likes of Ameritrade and countless others, why won't Amazon's growth be checked as well. these companies have the following similarities

1) Leading Internet Startups
2) Both sell "commodities"

One major difference is that E*Trade became profitable in a relatively short time frame whereas profits in Amazon are nowhere on the horizon.

E*trade market cap 1 billion. Amazon, 2.3 billion.

I am glad to hear that you were able to go long AMZN and be profitable. Please explain your justification for doing so.
