Thai Demand For New U.S. Impotence Drug But Approval Pending
May 01, 1998 2:24 AM

BANGKOK (Dow Jones)--The Thai subsidiary of a
U.S. drug manufacturer says it is fielding a flood of
phone calls about Viagra, the wildly popular new
impotence drug, local newspapers reported Friday.

However, Thailand's Food and Drug Administration has
yet to give the green light to the new drug, although its
manufacturer, Pfizer International, submitted it for
approval in February.

Demand for the drug in the U.S., manufactured by Pfizer
Inc. (PFE), has been so high since it went on sale April
15 that most pharmacies are completely out of stock.

Surang Runcharoen, public affairs officer for Pfizer in
Bangkok said his company had received more than 50
phone calls about Viagra since its release was reported
in the local media earlier this week.

'We don't get many inquiries on that scale for other
medicines,' he was quoted as saying in the Bangkok
Post.
