Don't trust datek's high/low figures, or volume, expecially in the morning.
Yes - processing is slow right after the bell.
Limit orders, not market orders, are safer.

I asked this question of a Schwab rep several years ago. Her answer was essentially this: All the overnight orders must be processed at the opening. These are "matched" up with buys and sells prior to the open, but the actual transactions can't be placed before the bell. This always causes a backlog right from the start. Some mornings it is inconsequential, others, not.

When I was with Ameritrade, I'd be dancing in the street for a 4 minute later confirmation on a market order. Their's were far worse than that. Sometimes I'd wait for 30 minutes. But, I'd always call them and get a verbal.
