I think there's an awful lot of room for situation-specific data here. for example, a sales team could have a new sales rep, and an experienced techie - and the techie does the demo.

In a lot of team selling situations, the sales guy gets to do all the talking, so the techie does the demo, just so he won't get bored. They could take turns.

Even as a Vantive VP, I always gave my own demos. I happen to think that salespeople should be able to give super demos. Wherever I am a board member (and more recently, a CEO), the salespeople were demo-capable. I like to see salespeople have demo contests, judged by an outsider. If a salesperson can't use the product, and aren't totally comfortable and confident with it, they won't be able to sell it as well.

Don't have the data about VNTV salespeople. John - I'm sure you were an awesome SCOP demo machine. But, if what has been said about VNTV is true, then thanks to Melissa for pointing it out so it can be fixed.
